Having a variety of social media platforms and pages is essential to the success of modern soccer teams. Without the use of major social media platforms, soccer teams would struggle to engage actively with their fan base. Facebook is the most commonly used social media platform and has a total of 2.375 billion users. Almost every professional soccer team has a Facebook page to inform their fans about current team news and results.
Another key social media platform is YouTube. YouTube has 1.9 billion users worldwide and is the home of all video-based content. Most soccer teams also have a YouTube platform to share the majority of their match highlights and post-game interviews.
Whilst Facebook and YouTube are necessities when successfully marketing a professional soccer team, Twitter and Instagram are other platforms with a significant user base. Instagram has 1 billion users in comparison to Twitters 330 million users but both platforms are important due to the difference in user base. Instagram is a media-based social media platform that focuses on photos and media whilst Twitter allows you to post text and other content. Although they have their differences, both platforms allow page administrators to connect with a wider audience through the use of hashtags. These hashtags allow anyone who searches or clicks on them to see any other posts with the same hashtag, increasing the tweet or photo's outreach.
The key to being successful on these social media platforms is to continuously engage your fan base with new content. Soccer teams can do this by regularly posting interviews, score updates, podcasts and highlights on various platforms. Additionally, using hashtags and creating an interactive space for your supporters can help increase the teams' marketability too. This ensures that users of all platforms can stay informed and interact with the teams latest scores or news regardless of what social media website they prefer.
